England Fight Back on Day 2, Trail England by 133 Runs in Thrilling Manchester Test
Day 2 Recap: England's Resolute Response
Resuming their first innings, India added vital runs before being bowled out for 358. While Yashasvi Jaiswal (58), Sai Sudharsan (61), and Rishabh Pant (54) all contributed half-centuries, it was captain Ben Stokes who truly shone with the ball, claiming an impressive 5-wicket haul (5-72) to restrict the visitors. Jofra Archer also chipped in with three crucial wickets (3-73).
When England's turn came to bat, the openers provided exactly the start the team needed. Zak Crawley, looking in sublime touch, raced to 84 off just 113 balls, striking 13 fours and a six. His aggressive approach put the Indian bowlers on the back foot from the outset. Ben Duckett matched his opening partner's intent, scoring a rapid 94 off 100 deliveries, adorned with 13 boundaries. The duo put on a formidable partnership that set the tone for England's innings.
Although both openers fell before the close – Crawley caught by Rahul off Ravindra Jadeja, and Duckett caught by substitute Dhruv Jurel off Anshul Kamboj – Ollie Pope (20*) and Joe Root (11*) steadied the ship, ensuring no further wickets fell before stumps. With eight wickets in hand and the likes of Harry Brook and captain Ben Stokes yet to bat, England will be optimistic about surpassing India's total and building a significant lead on Day 3.
The stage is set for a thrilling third day at Old Trafford, with both teams vying for control of this crucial fourth Test.
