The opening day of the first Test between India and West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad belonged entirely to the home team. What was expected to be a tough opening day after West Indies won the toss and opted to bat first turned into a spectacle of fast bowling and composed batting, leaving the tourists playing catch-up from the word go.

Pace Firepower Sees West Indies Collapse for 162

The West Indies top order simply crumbled against a relentless Indian pace attack, spearheaded by the dynamic duo of Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah. Despite the favourable toss, the visitors never found their footing, losing their last five wickets for just 72 runs in the second session.

Mohammed Siraj was the wrecker-in-chief, delivering a magnificent spell to claim figures of 4 for 40 from his 14 overs. His early strikes, including the wickets of T Chanderpaul (0), Alick Athanaze (12), and Brandon King (13), decimated the top order. Fellow pacer Jasprit Bumrah was equally lethal, finishing with 3 for 42, including two pin-point yorkers to clean up the tail. Bumrah's haul helped him achieve the remarkable milestone of becoming the fastest Indian pacer to reach 50 Test wickets at home-a true display of his expertise and accuracy in home conditions.

A brief 48-run resistance between Roston Chase (24) and Shai Hope (26) was the only bright spot for the Windies, but that too was swiftly broken by the guile of left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav (2/25). The West Indies were eventually bundled out for a paltry 162 in just 44.1 overs, handing India a massive psychological advantage at the tea break.

The Wall: KL Rahul Anchors India's Reply

Coming out to bat on a pitch that had eased out but still demanded respect, the Indian openers provided a solid start. Yashasvi Jaiswal (36) looked sharp and aggressive, putting on a quick 68-run opening stand with KL Rahul. However, Jaiswal fell to the lively Jayden Seales, edging behind, and new man Sai Sudharsan's stay was short-lived, trapped LBW by captain Roston Chase for 7.

With the scoreboard at 90/2, the pressure briefly shifted, but KL Rahul stood firm like a rock. Displaying immense concentration and a classic Test match temperament, he brought up a crucial half-century, remaining unbeaten on a gritty 53 off 114 balls. Rahul’s composure was matched by captain Shubman Gill (18)*, and the duo navigated the final hour expertly, adding 31 runs to ensure India ended the day without further damage.

India closed Day 1 on 121/2, trailing by only 41 runs. With Rahul and Gill looking well-set, and a long tail of capable all-rounders, the hosts are perfectly positioned to bat big on Day 2 and put the match result almost beyond doubt.
