Sri Lanka Crushes Afghanistan to Seal Super 4 Spot in Asia Cup 2025
In a thrilling Group B encounter at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi, Sri Lanka outclassed Afghanistan by six wickets to book their place in the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup 2025.
Afghanistan, after winning the toss and opting to bat, posted a competitive 169/8 in 20 overs. The innings saw a late blitz from veteran Mohammad Nabi, who smashed 60 off just 22 balls, including five sixes in the final over. Rashid Khan chipped in with 24, but the Lankan bowlers kept the pressure on.
Nuwan Thushara was the star with the ball, claiming 4 wickets for just 18 runs, including three in the powerplay. Chameera, Wellalage, and Shanaka picked up one each, while Hasaranga bowled economically.
Chasing 170, Sri Lanka lost early wickets, but Kusal Mendis held firm with a classy unbeaten 74 off 52 balls. He was well supported by Kusal Perera (28) and Kamindu Mendis (26*), as Sri Lanka reached the target in 18.4 overs.
With this win, Sri Lanka topped Group B and will face Bangladesh in the first Super 4 match on September 20 at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, 8 PM IST.
