Series: South Africa tour of England 2025 – 3rd ODI

England crushed South Africa by a world-record margin of 342 runs in the 3rd ODI, but still lost the series 1-2.

Southampton: England might have lost the ODI series 1-2 to South Africa, but they signed off in style with a historic 342-run victory in the third and final ODI at The Rose Bowl. This is now the largest margin of victory in ODI history, surpassing India’s previous record of 317 runs against Sri Lanka in 2023.

After being asked to bat first, England’s top order fired on all cylinders. Youngsters Jacob Bethell (110 off 82) and Joe Root (100 off 96) anchored the innings beautifully. Quick-fire cameos from Jamie Smith (62 off 48) and Jos Buttler (62 off 32) pushed England to a mammoth 414/5 in 50 overs.

South Africa never got going in reply. Jofra Archer made a dream return to ODI cricket with 4 wickets for just 18 runs, while Adil Rashid picked up 3/13. South Africa collapsed for a mere 72 in 20.5 overs, with only Corbin Bosch (20) showing some resistance.

Despite this crushing win, England lost the series 1-2, having been outplayed in the first two matches. However, this match gave them a massive morale boost and a statement performance.
