Samson Fined as RR Fall
It was a tough day for Rajasthan Royals' captain Sanju Samson on Wednesday. Not only did his team suffer a 58-run defeat against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, marking their third loss of the season, but Samson also found himself penalized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for breaching the IPL code of conduct.
The penalty stemmed from Rajasthan Royals' failure to maintain the required over-rate during the match, which is governed under Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct. This fine marked the team’s second offence of the season, after a similar breach in their game against Chennai Super Kings last month at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. During that match, stand-in captain Riyan Parag was penalized INR 12 lakh for the same violation.
This time, Samson was handed a much heftier fine of INR 24 lakh. The rest of the players in the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were fined either INR 6 lakh or 25% of their respective match fees, whichever was lesser, as per an IPL media release.
As for the match, Gujarat Titans proved to be the dominant side. Thanks to an outstanding 82-run performance from Sai Sudharsan (53 balls), and explosive contributions from Jos Buttler (36), Shahrukh Khan (36), and Rahul Tewatia (24), Gujarat Titans posted an imposing total of 217/6.
In response, Rajasthan Royals fought valiantly but fell short. Despite impressive knocks from Shimron Hetmyer (52) and captain Sanju Samson (41), RR were bowled out for 159 in just 19.1 overs.
Looking ahead, Rajasthan Royals will return home to face Royal Challengers Bangalore at Jaipur on Sunday, while Gujarat Titans will travel to the Ekana Stadium to take on Lucknow Super Giants.
