Two of Indian cricket's greatest names, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, are set to keep their A+ grade central BCC contracts for the season of 2025-26. The duo continues to earn Rs 7 crore under the A+ contracts despite both announcing their retirements from the T20I format.

They were a big part of that eventful July last year as they etched their names in history by ending an ICC trophy jinx for India, winning the T20 World Cup in Barbados, which served as their last appearance in that format.

Back then, sources from the BCCI stated, "The Board holds in high regard the legacy of such cricketing legends." The source further added, "Rohit and Virat will continue their A+ central contracts (7 crore) even after retiring from the T20I format.".

While these players have an excellent contribution to the sport, the discussion these days is about their recent performances. Rohit, as expected, has not come back to top form, which is an added surprise after pandemic shutting and mostly white-ball cricket-focused. The result was dismal as he scored only 91 runs with an average of 15.17 during India's historic 3-0 series win over New Zealand. There are other Test-like countries where he has performed poorly of late-better say Bangladesh and Australia, where he threw just 31 runs in five innings against Australia.

And just so Kohli, his performance is in discussions after he managed to play just 190 runs in ten innings in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He scored 655 runs across 23 international appearances and 32 innings in the entire 2024 calendar year, with an average of 21.83. The former captain's legacy and influence in Indian cricket, however, are still undeniable.

As some positive changes have occurred, Shreyas Iyer is expected to return to the central contract list after being thrown out for not being seen in enough domestic cricket during the previous season. Iyer has shone very well in recent form, particularly in the Ranji Trophy, where he scored 480 runs at an average of 68.57. His explosive performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (345 runs) and the Vijay Hazare Trophy (325 runs) underlined that he is certainly in India's plans going forward.

Shreyas back puts Virat and Rohit before an exciting next year in Indian cricket, virtually guaranteeing high-voltage battles on and off the field.
